Where to Buy High-Quality Manuka Honey in Singapore
Manuka honey is a special type of honey made by bees that forage on the mānuka bush, Leptospermum scoparium. It is known for its naturally occurring—and often elevated—levels of methylglyoxal, or MGO, a compound associated with its distinctive antibacterial activity. It is commonly labelled using MGO or UMF grading.
Research indexed by PubMed links MGO with Manuka honey’s antibacterial activity, but a food jar is not a medical treatment. Medical-grade honey used for wound care is a separate, controlled product.
Where Can I Buy High-Quality Manuka Honey in Singapore?
High-quality Manuka honey in Singapore is available from specialist honey retailers, official brand stores, selected pharmacies, supermarkets and verified marketplace sellers.
Do not judge by shop reputation alone. Compare the exact jar’s origin, activity rating, testing, batch information, Singapore importer, price per 100g, delivery and seller transparency.
The best jar is usually the one that can explain itself.
Give the Jar a “Manuka Passport Check”
Before deciding where to buy, look for:
- Origin: Where was the honey harvested and packed?
- Type: Is it monofloral, multifloral or unstated?
- Activity: Does it show a clear MGO or UMF rating?
- Evidence: Is there independent certification, a licence or batch result?
- Traceability: Can you identify the producer and batch?
- Singapore responsibility: Is a local importer, distributor or agent shown?
- Real cost: What is the price per 100g after delivery?
“Singapore brand”, “sold in Singapore” and “Singapore honey” do not mean the same thing. Our guide to local honey brands in Singapore explains the distinction.
The Singapore Food Agency says food labels help buyers understand a product’s source, contents and quantity, and prepacked foods sold locally must comply with labelling requirements. Singapore’s Food Regulations also require imported food to identify its country of origin and local importer, distributor or agent.
UMF and MGO, Without the Label Fog

MGO states the concentration of methylglyoxal in milligrams per kilogram. A higher number means more measured MGO, but not automatically better flavour, better value or greater suitability for everyday use.
UMF is a broader certification for New Zealand Manuka honey. According to the UMF Honey Association, its four-factor test considers MGO, leptosperin, DHA and HMF to assess potency, authenticity, expected shelf-life performance and freshness.
The New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries requires exported honey labelled as mānuka to meet its scientific definition through recognised laboratory testing.
Australian Manuka follows a different framework. The Australian Manuka Honey Association says its authenticity mark requires Australian production and independent testing against stated MGO and DHA criteria.
Judge each origin through its relevant evidence system rather than forcing unlike grading systems into a false comparison.
You may also see TA, or Total Activity, on some Australian honey labels. TA measures the honey’s overall antibacterial activity, while MGO refers specifically to the concentration of methylglyoxal, one of the key compounds associated with Manuka honey’s non-peroxide activity. Because the two systems measure different things, the numbers should not be treated as interchangeable. You can see how The Honey Colony reports these measures in its independent honey lab testing results.

Marketplaces are not automatically risky, and pharmacy shelves are not medical endorsements. What matters is whether the seller, origin, rating and route for questions or returns are clear.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is UMF better than MGO?
Not automatically. MGO measures the concentration of one key compound, while UMF evaluates several markers within a New Zealand certification system. For Australian Manuka, look for documented MGO testing and relevant Australian authenticity evidence. The appropriate system depends partly on where the honey was produced.
How can I tell whether Manuka honey is authentic in Singapore?
Check the harvest country, monofloral or multifloral description, rating, certification or batch details, Singapore importer and legal seller. When an online listing leaves gaps, ask for documents relating to the exact jar rather than relying on broad claims about the brand.
Is a Higher MGO or UMF Rating Always Worth Paying For?
No. Higher activity usually costs more, but value depends on your purpose, preferred flavour, jar size and the evidence supporting the rating. A clearly documented moderate rating may make more sense for daily food use than the highest number available.
Honey should never be given to babies under 12 months, according to the Mayo Clinic.
